How is it even possible that today is the last day of this incredible journey.  This whole thing started out as crazy talk around tents somewhere in Illinois last June where we met Jackie, Jim, Bill, and Mel.  Now, we are about to complete a cross-country bicycle ride...WOW!  Of course Patrick was there to capture our last start:
Picture
Let's get this done.
We crossed the bridge over the St John's River and turned onto a bicycle path.  I wasn't sure how far the path was going to take us since on the map it changed from a solid line to a nonexistent line to a dotted line, but I was hopeful.  After yesterday's added 4 miles, the others were a bit skeptical and kept asking me if we were going the right way.  I just kept saying that all was good and we continued up the bicycle trail.

Almost 20 miles later we arrived at the trailhead where there were picnic tables and restrooms.  How great that two-thirds of today's ride was on a bicycle path.  We continued on Highway 207 and pretty much followed the signs to St Augustine Beach.  It was arranged that we would see Patrick and Mary's fiancé Steve, on 11th street which ended at the beach.  We made the left turn onto 11th and was was surprised to see Steve, his parents, and his sister holding up a "FINISH" sign.  What an incredible surprise.  Then, to top it off, Steve sprayed us down with champagne as we each rode under the sign.
Picture
A surprise awaited us as we entered the beach
We removed shoes and carried our bicycles on the sandy path that lead to the beach.  Patrick jumped in the ocean with his camera around his neck and took the much awaited photo of us dipping the front tire of our bicycles in the Atlantic Ocean.  WOOHOO!

WE ARE DONE!
The dipping of the tires was followed by celebratory champagne, courtesy of Jackie's sister Kathy.

Some of us then celebrated by jumping into the Atlantic Ocean.

Another crazy adventure completed by Tim and I
After the beach celebration we went across the street for some lunch and then headed to the RV park to get some of the packing done.  Afterwards, we checked into our AirBnB and went of for our celebration dinner to Columbia Restaurant (very good).  Of course we all wore our custom shirts that Jim and Jackie's daughter designed for us.  What a great time.

After dinner Tim and I stopped off at a brewery that happened to be on the way home, or sort of on the way home.  This is Ancient City Brewery in St Augustine where we got the obligatory flight of beer.

Delicious flight of beer.
Tomorrow is a zero day...haha.  We will be hanging out in St Augustine for one more day before people fly home on Friday.  There should be at least more more blog post before I close this out with final thoughts and a collection of my favorite photos from the trip.  Until then...

There was a bright street light above the tent.  Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night I thought the sun was up and my alarm didn't go off.  Crazy night.  When it was morning we were surprised to find the tent was completely dry.  We quickly got up and took the tent down before dew or rain got it wet.  Last night was the last night we are sleeping in the tent, so when we put it away today we won't see it till we pick it up in Ohio in May.

As planned, we left at 9 AM and Patrick was there to capture the moment:
Picture
Ready to ride.
When we left we knew it will eventually rain on us and 8 miles in, it finally did.
Picture
Putting on rain jackets
The rain continued on and off for the entire day, but since it wasn't too cold, the rain wasn't too bad.  I think at this point we can all pretty much deal with and be happy with any conditions since we only have one more day after today to ride.  As a matter of fact, I missed a turn adding 4 miles to the ride today and everyone took it pretty good.

All day we knew, and looked forward to the 25 miles of bicycle trail we get to ride on today.  The trail did not disappoint.  Within the first mile of the trail we saw a gopher tortoise.

So beautiful
All was good until we hit the the end of the trail with no warning.  Oh well...it was nice while it lasted.

The last 5 miles to the hotel was good, which was good for me since we should have been done with the by now if I didn't miss the turn earlier.

Everyone checked into their room, showered, and met at the Beef O'Brady's which happen to be attached to the hotel.  It was a great dinner which included Mary's fiancé's Steve's parents and sister.

Tomorrow is the day.  We only have 30 miles to the Atlantic Ocean.  It is hard to believe!

It was a pretty noisy  night.  It seem that people were coming and gong all night from this small RV park…weird.  As usual, I woke up before the alarm went off wishing I can fall asleep for another 15 minutes, but my bladder had other plans.  It was agreed upon to leave around 8:45 AM, but Patrick decided that he wanted to get a bicycle ride in and go to the CVS in town, so Mel and Bill joined him at 8:15 AM, and about 30 minutes later we met them on the side of the road in Perry.  Five miles down, only 75 to go.
Picture
Enjoying the scenery
There was a head wind most of the day, but the road surface was great and we were able to maintain around a 15 mile per hour average.  Our first stop was 23 miles in, so by the time we got there, we already had a pretty good start.  During the first break, I looked at the map and noticed there was a bicycle path coming up that ran along the road we were supposed to ride on.  Before mile 23 we jumped on the path and was able to ride all the way to our next stop in the town of Mayo, 10 miles away.  It was a nice break from riding along the shoulder worrying if the car behind was going to hit us.  Plus, the trees along the trail blocked some of the cross wind making it easier to ride.
Picture
Nice bicycle trail
The next stop we crossed the Suwannee River into Bradford.  50 miles in now, less than 20 to go.  The weather all day was humid but cloudy so it wasn’t too bad riding.  The last 20 miles seemed to threaten rain, but it held off.  We arrived in High Springs and turned north for the last 5 miles where we had an awesome tailwind allowing up to pedal 19 miles per hour…how nice after 75 miles of a slight headwind.

We arrived at the RV Park just before 4 PM…pretty good time for an 80 mile ride.  About 1 hour later, Steve, Mary’s fiancee arrived with his parents in their RV.  His parents live near Brooksville, only 1 hour away.  Steve flew down to be here when we finish the ride on Wednesday.

While hanging out after the ride, Patrick took some awesome portrait photos.  I did manage to snap of photo of Patrick as well:

Tomorrow we have 75 miles, but the last 25 of it is on a bicycle trail so it should be a really nice day.  Plus, we are in a hotel tomorrow night making it just a little bit sweeter.  As a matter of fact, tonight is the last night we (Mel, Bill, Tim, and I) are camping and the last night Jackie and Jim are sleeping in the RV.  We are all in a hotel tomorrow night and in and AirBnB in St Augustine.  I really like the tent, but Tim is quite a happy camper (literally) tonight.  Only 2 riding days left…this is really coming to an end…unbelievable!

We woke up to 100% humidity with everything outside wet which I guess is what is expected in Florida.  Today is under 60 miles, so should be a nice ride.  We left as scheduled at 9 AM and Patrick got a photo as we took off.
Picture
Leaving in the morning
Tim and I was in front of the group and noticed a bicycle trail around mile 11. We hopped on thinking it was only going to last a short time.  We were able to take it all the way to our first stop at mile 14.  After that, everyone got on the trail and it continued on till mile 22.  What a treat to be a bicycle trail for 11 miles.
Picture
Nice bicycle trail
Yesterday I mentioned that there was an oyster bar on the route today.  At the first stop everyone said they were interested in stopping there, so at mile 24 we stopped at Ouzts' Too Oyster Bar and Grill in Crawfordville.  The chef was at the bar preparing horseradish for the oysters and I asked him how they were.  He said they were delicious and offered us each a sample oyster.  They were delicious.  Mary and Jackie shared a dozen and Tim ate his own dozen.
Picture
Slurping down some oysters
Bill and I each ordered the smoke mullet which was also delicious.
While we were there, a guy at the bar came over and said that he owns a bar in Perry, close to where we were staying.  He gave us a business card and told us that if we stop there we can each get a free beer…my favorite kind of beer.  Thanks!  It was great food and a great time stopping there.  After the oyster bar, the next stop wss scheduled for mile 38.  When we arrived there it was closed…bummer.  At this point we only had 20 miles left.  10 miles later we stopped for a quick breather on the side of the road, and 10 miles later we made it to Rocky’s RV Campground.

After some relaxing and snacking, everyone took showers after which we figured we should cash in on the free beer.  We all piled into Patrick’s truck and drove the 3 miles to The Wheel House.  When we saw the menu we decided to make it our dinner as well.  The french fries were great.
Picture
Dinner out
We arrived back at the camp and Mary found another long-distance cyclist who came by to talk.  He is currently riding from St. Augustine to New Orleans.  In the past, he had ridden around the world for 2 years…wow!

Tomorrow is a long day at 80 miles.  We are planning on getting a little earlier start at 8:45 AM, so the alarm is going off 15 minutes earlier than usual.  At this point I guess I don’t really care since we are almost done.  Only 3 riding days left…it is hard to believe.

Panacea, FL

Woke up around 8 AM, stayed in tent until 9:45 AM, ate breakfast in RV, walked to the liquor store with Mary and bought some beer, returned to the RV park, sat outside behind the RV staring at the water for most of the afternoon, played cribbage against Bill (he won 2 matches to 1), ate lunch while the others played Rummycub, walked  to the gas station for boiled peanuts and more beer with Mary, took a kayak out for a spin, ate dinner (shrimp and tofu stir fry), ate dessert (special chocolate concoction that Jackie made for my birthday a couple of days late), and am now doing laundry.

Tomorrow is around 60 miles and the plan is to get out by 9 AM.  It looks like it is going to be a nice ride.

I woke up and got out of the tent to a beautiful scene on the water.  It rained with thunderstorms throughout the night, but it had stopped now and the forecast indicated that the rain should stay away until afternoon.  It wasn’t any fun packing the tent away when it was soaking wet, but we are camping tonight so we can air it our when we get to the RV park tonight.  Right on time, at 9 AM, we were all ready to ride.

We walked our bicycles out to the road since the grounds of the RV park is just sand.  We got on our bicycles and about 2 minutes later the sky opened up and it started raining.  OY!  It did stop after a few minutes and we dried out and felt like we were in the clear.  then, about 10 minutes later, there was rumbling in the sky and it opened up again.  This time we could tell that it wasn’t going to let up and time soon…so much for the forecast.
Picture
In between rain clouds
There wasn’t a gas station till around mile 19.  We would usually make a roadside stop around mile 15, but not in the rain.  We made it to the gas station soaking wet and hung out there for a while until the rain stopped and we got back on the road.  We rode through Apalachicola and over the bridge to Eastpoint.

Tim and I were passing a seafood restaurant and I decided it would be nice to stop for a sandwich.  The others didn’t feel like stoping so they went ahead as Tim and I went in.  After being seated and looking at the menu we decided it didn’t look too good, so we got back on the bicycles and continued on.  About 1 mile further, with Tim in front of me, I spited a brewery and yelled at Tim to stop.  He looked back and continued.  I then yelled, “Tim, brewery,” which made it stop and turn around.

Eastpoint Brewery has only been opened for 3 months.  They only had 3 beers on tap because with spring break, they have been selling a lot of beer.  I guess it is a good problem to have.
Picture

After drinking the flight, we were back on the rainy road.  As we were approaching Carrabelle, FL I received a text saying that the group stopped at Two Brothers seafood restaurant.  We were about 1/2 mile away, so it was good timing.  We stopped, and since everyone just ordered, we were able to order a grouper sandwich and a couple of beers.  We tried to delay leaving since it was raining, but the restaurant was closing so we went outside.  We all stood under the awning wishing we didn’t have to ride in this rain.
Picture
Not happy with the weather
Picture
Tim and Jackie riding though the rain
Tim and I took the plunge and headed out first.  It was raining and it was chilly, but we only had 25 miles to ride to get to the RV park.  The rain finally stopped about 10 miles out and we had a pleasant ride in to the RV park with a tailwind.  Of course, when we went to set up our tent, the rain started up again, but we managed to get it up and keep our stuff dry.
After showers it was decided that we would go our to dinner at the seafood restaurant across the street.   Since there wasn’t much for Mel to eat, her and Bill stayed behind as the rest of us walked to dinner.  The food was OK, but it was a fun night out.  After dinner we got back to the park and went to the tent.  I played with my phone some and then went to sleep without blogging.  Tomorrow is a zero day, so I can do it tomorrow, which is today.

Another morning waking up in an AirBnB…so nice.  Patrick actually showed up before 8 AM, so we loaded our luggage and headed out to meet the others at the RV park.  It was only 2.5 miles to the RV park so we got there early enough to take care of all our morning tasks (fill water bottles, pump up tires, make lunch, apply bag balm, etc).  We were all ready to leave at 9 AM as planned.

As soon as we left Panama City Beach and crossed over the Hathaway Bridge to Panama City, the hurricane destruction began showing up.  We knew that we were going to ride through the area that Hurricane Michael made landfall 6 months ago, but we weren’t really sure what to expect.  At first it was just a few buildings here and there with some damage.  Then it became more and more damage and more and more buildings.  When we arrived in Parker, the place for our first stop, it was entire streets that were knocked out.  We were lucky the gas station was even opened, although they still didn’t have a working bathroom.
Picture
Damage
Picture
Tim riding past damage
We soon crossed over the Tyndall Highway bridge and the damage at Tyndall Air Force Base was pretty apparent.  The base housing we destroyed as was many vehicles lining the fence.  Buildings looked damaged and gutted.  There was a hanger size building with huge gaps in its side and roof.  Every other tree was snapped at the trunk.  It was just amazing.

We continued riding, with a tremendous headwind, into Mexico Beach which was pretty much the epicenter of the hurricane.  There was pretty much total destruction.  Entire neighborhoods are not there anymore.  We saw many, many lots with an RV sitting on it, obviously being the new family home for now.  Luckily Patrick made an appearance and decided to pullover to provide support for our lunch stop since there was nothing else.

After a police officer chased us off because we were stopped in the middle of a street, we were back on the road for the last 24 miles of the day.  That wouldn’t be too bad except for the fact that there is a 15 mile per hour wind directly in our face.

As we continued south of Mexico Beach, the destruction just continued (as did the wind).  Then at around mile 50, it sounded like I was loosing air in my tire.  I pulled over and found a nail going directly through my tire and back out:
Picture
Quite the flat
Since everyone was struggling with the wind, I told them to continue on to the RV park and that Tim and I would be fine.  I am, after all, an expert flat tire fixer by now.  After about 15 minutes, Tim and I were back on the road that actually turned to the south getting the wind out of our face for about 8 miles which was a relief.  Oh, I did see a bald eagle which was pretty cool:
Picture
Bald eagle
Tim and I pulled into the RV park just before 6 PM…the reason it was so late is that we crossed into the eastern time zone today, so we lost an hour.  After setting up camp and showering, we had dinner (left over salmon for me, and chicken tiki for the meat eaters).  Tonight is supposed to rain and there are thundershowers in the forecast for the morning.  The plan is to ride at 9 AM, but if there are thundershowers then we will delay.  We will just have to wait and see.

Slept in till 7:30 AM, staying in bed working on reservation for the next few weeks, finished airline reservations for our future UK trip, ate leftover pasta from dinner last night, got pizza for lunch, went to the beach with the others, returned to the AirBnB, showered, went out to dinner with Mel and Bill, returned to the AirBnB, caught up blog, and now going to sleep.

Tomorrow is under 70 miles and should be an interesting ride through Hurricane Michael hit area.  It should be interesting.

Happy 49th birthday to me!! Today should be a great day.  We get to ride through some beautiful areas; Okaloosa Island, old 98 in Destin, 30A, and into Panama City Beach.  Out plan was to leave at 9 AM, and that is exactly when we left.
Picture
Pulling out of the RV park
We rode 10 miles and was able to meet up with our great friend Dave.  He left class and met us on the side of the road.  It was great seeing him, even if it was for only 10 minutes.
Picture
Thanks Dave for meeting us.
We road about 6 more miles and took a break at Beasley Park on Okaloosa Island, one of my favorite beaches in the area.
Picture
Enjoying our break on Okaloosa Island
Next stop...Destin, Florida.
Picture
Destin
Since I have ridden my bicycle in this area, I knew a route that runs parallel to US 98 so we could avoid the crazy traffic riding through Destin.  This was going to be the safer way to go.  That is until a garbage pail jumped out in front of me and i ran into it.  Luckily I only wound up with a few abrasions on my right hand, left knee, and left elbow, but it really shook me up.  Luckily Mel had bandages and ointment to fix me up.  We got back on the bicycles and continued riding.  After a few miles we were passing a Wallgreen's so I decided to go in and pick up some Aleve to help with the pain and swelling.

Needless to say, the accident was the end of my picture taking for the day.  I can tell you that the ride on 30A was really nice until we hit Seaside (the town that The Truman Show was filmed in).  All of a sudden, the roads and bicycle trail because crazy busy with teenage kids riding bicycles in all directions.  We took some back road to avoid the center of Seaside, but the craziness continued on the other side of the town.  It took us a while to navigate through the mess, but we finally made it to the end of 30A, continued on US 98, and then down to the beach road into Panama City Beach.  When we were about 3 miles from the AirBnB we stopped at Shucker's for a drink which I really needed to help soothe some of my pain.
Picture
Shucker's in Panama City Beach
We checked into the AirBnB and Bill and I walked to the liquor store on the corner for some more "medication".  I had heard about Four Loko and figured this was a good time to try it out since it is 12% alcohol by volume.
Picture

We tried to go to the Shrimp Basket for dinner, but there was a 1.5 hour wait so we winded up at Carrabba's.  It was OK, but they were nice enough to proved me an ice cream desert for my birthday.
Picture
Birthday dinner at Carrabba's
We went back to the AirBnB somewhere around 9:30 PM.  It wasn't long until we were all asleep.  I'm actually writing this blog the next night and it is 10:30 PM so I am ready for bed.  I guess that is all for now.

Daily Elevation. 6 climbs, 6 bridges
I’ve been looking forward to this day since the ride started.  We are “home” and I want to show my fellow riders what this area has to offer.  They all pretty much agreed to give this day to me and for them to just enjoy.  We got on the road at 9 AM just as planned and headed towards the Florida border.  Today we have 6 bridges to cross.  The first bridge takes us over to Perdido Key and just a couple of more miles we make it to the Florida / Alabama border.  Since we didn’t get a photo in front of a “Welcome to Alabama” sign, we took one now.
Picture
More like goody Alabama
We then walked around the famous Flora-Bama Lounge.  This bar sits on the border of Alabama and Florida.
Picture

We then rode the half mile to the “Welcome to Florida” sign.  This is where we met Michael who is also riding across the country.  He started about a week after we did.  Michael is riding solo as his wife is supporting him and meeting him at a hotel each night.  Anyway, Michael was kind enough to take our photo:
Picture
7 states done, 1 to go!
We continued east and arrived at the townhouse that Tim and I rent a few months each year.  It is pretty crazy to be riding through our neighborhood and on the roads that we used to train for this trip.  We then crossed our second bridge of the day off of Perdido Key and into Pensacola.  After a quick stop at the library to use the bathroom, we continued to the surprise stop of the day, our great friend and motorcycle club brother, Mouse’s house.  He was kind enough to provide us water, beer, and fruit for our 25 mile pit stop.  Rigger surprised us and was also there to greet us.  It was great seeing them since we haven’t seen them since February.
Picture
Reunited with Rigger and Mouse
We left Mouse and Rigger and headed for bridge number three that takes us over to the historic side of Pensacola and our next stop, Joe Pattie’s Seafood Market, for some fresh steamed shrimp…oh, Michael and his wife joined us.  As I was waiting for my number to be called, Eclipse showed up.  What a surprise!
Picture
Next we crossed bridge number four, 3 mile bridge and then shortly crossed bridge number five, Pensacola Beach bridge.  Just over that bridge is The Sandshaker, famous for their bushwackers, a creamy, frozen drink with Kahlúa, Creme de Cocoa, and Rum.  It was delicious, and Michael and his wife enjoyed one as well.
Picture

Next is the highlight of the day, riding through the National Seashore road, one of my favorite roads to be on.
Picture
Loving the ride today
We met up with Patrick who was enjoying a swim on this wonderful beach and then we were off to Windjammer’s for a beer on the Gulf.  Oh, Michael and his wife joined us.
Picture
A beer with a view
At this point, everyone has put up with me and all the stops and were ready to get to the RV park.  We were just over 3 miles from there and after crossing our last bridge number six, we were in Navarre and pulled into the RV park by 4:30 PM.

I was able to get in touch with Lookout and Towney and they agreed to stop by for a few beers, so we set up camp, jumped in the shower, and helped prepare dinner.  Just after 6:30 PM Lookout and Towney arrived and we had a great time hanging out, drinking a few beers, and catching up.  I sure miss spending time with my motorcycle club brothers.

After they left, we got in the tent around 9:30 PM.  Wow…it’s a late night!  It is now 10:30 PM as I finish typing up this blog entry, so I’m going to end it here and get some sleep.  Tomorrow we have just over 70 miles and it will be another beautiful day riding along some beach roads.  It will be great.
